In recent years, awareness of plastic pollution has shifted from ocean waste to the microscopic scale. We filter our drinking water, avoid plastic storage containers, and look for organic clothing. Yet one of our most repetitive daily habits remains largely unexamined: oral hygiene.
As health-conscious consumers look to cut synthetic polymers out of their routines, a specific question keeps coming up: do electric toothbrushes have microplastics? Below, we break down where the risk actually comes from, and what "microplastic-free" does and doesn't mean when you're shopping for a new brush.
The Invisible Problem in Your Bathroom
For decades, commercial toothpaste brands used plastic microbeads as abrasive agents to scrub away surface stains. Federal regulations have banned intentionally added microbeads, but microplastic exposure from oral care hasn't disappeared — it's shifted to the brush itself.
Every day, brushing applies friction and moisture to a synthetic material. When standard petroleum-based nylon bristles break down over time, you can end up reintroducing the exact particles you're trying to avoid, straight into your mouth.
Do Electric Toothbrushes Have Microplastics?
Yes — and the research on this has gotten a lot more specific. A Raman hyperspectral imaging study directly confirmed that toothbrushes shed plastic fragments during brushing, estimating release on the order of thousands of particles per day, per brush. Across all oral care products tested — toothpaste, mouthwash, floss — toothbrushes carried the single highest microplastic burden, at 30 to 120 particles per brush and roughly 49,000 particles per person, per year. The polymers identified match what's in standard bristles and housings: polyethylene, nylon, PET, and polypropylene.
High-performance electric toothbrushes vibrate at roughly 30,000–40,000 brush strokes per minute. When petroleum-based nylon bristles rub against tooth enamel at that frequency over months of daily use, microscopic fragments can fracture, break away, and be swallowed.
No published study has isolated electric brushes as their own category with separate emissions data — the mechanism of release (bristle abrasion against enamel) is the same whether the brush is manual or powered. But it's worth being direct about what that means: a sonic motor's higher stroke frequency plausibly increases particle generation compared to manual brushing, not decreases it. That hasn't been directly measured, so we won't claim it as fact, but it's a reason the bristle and housing material matter more, not less, on an electric brush.
Most electric toothbrush replacement heads are also housed in rigid plastic casings, where internal moving parts create additional micro-friction before the bristles even touch your teeth.
Are Bamboo Toothbrush Bristles Actually Plastic-Free?
Here's where a lot of "eco" toothbrush marketing gets fuzzy — including, we'll be direct, some of our own past copy. Bamboo handles solve the housing problem: bamboo is biodegradable, and it replaces the bulky petroleum-plastic casing entirely.
Bristles are a different story. Castor-oil-based bristles (sometimes labeled Nylon-11) are a real improvement — they're made from a renewable plant feedstock instead of petroleum, which cuts fossil-fuel input and lowers the carbon footprint of every bristle. But chemically, they're still nylon. They're not biodegradable, and there isn't published evidence that they shed less than petroleum nylon under the same brushing friction. If a toothbrush is marketed as fully "microplastic-free," the bristles are usually the asterisk.
The one bristle material that's genuinely biodegradable is boar hair — but boar bristle production carries a larger greenhouse gas footprint than plant-based nylon, which is why most sustainability-focused brands (Kaylaan included) don't use it. Outside that exception, no toothbrush brand on the market currently ships fully biodegradable bristles.
The honest takeaway: switching from petroleum nylon to castor-oil nylon is a real, meaningful upgrade — less fossil fuel dependency, a smaller carbon footprint, no petroleum extraction — just not a "zero plastic" one. Anyone telling you otherwise about any bristle on the market isn't being straight with you.

Is This Actually a Health Risk?
Before this reads as scarier than the evidence supports: no clinical study has shown that microplastics from oral care products cause periodontitis, oral cancer, or any systemic disease in people. Researchers have found microplastics embedded in human dental calculus, and isolated particles are toxic to gum cells in lab settings — but that's a mechanistic, in-vitro finding, not proof of real-world harm. The largest simulation study on the topic concluded that typical toothbrush and toothpaste use, on its own, does not pose a demonstrable direct health risk.
So the case for switching materials right now is environmental, not medical: less petroleum plastic shed into your sink, and eventually into waterways that treatment plants aren't built to filter particles this small out of. If that changes as the research matures, we'll update this post — but we're not going to overstate the health case to make a better sales pitch.
Why Your Toothbrush Hardware Matters as Much as Your Toothpaste
If you're already using a toothpaste without microplastics in a reusable tin or jar, that's a strong first step — but clean ingredients in your paste can't offset a petroleum-plastic brush head. Your hardware needs to match your ingredients, and reducing petroleum plastic here also cuts down on what ends up in landfills and waterways.
One Trade-Off Worth Knowing
We'd rather tell you this than have you find it elsewhere: a 2020 life-cycle assessment in the British Dental Journal found that electric toothbrushes — as a category, across brands — carry the worst overall environmental footprint of any toothbrush type, driven by batteries and electronics rather than bristle or housing material. In that study, bamboo and replaceable-head manual brushes had the lowest footprint across nearly every impact category measured.

But if your single top priority is minimizing total carbon footprint, a manual bamboo brush beats any electric brush, full stop — ours included. How to Build a Microplastic-Conscious Routine
You don't have to give up the strength of a sonic motor to cut petroleum plastic out of your routine:
- Switch to earth-derived materials. A bamboo handle replaces the bulky, non-recyclable plastic housing that dominates store shelves — and it's genuinely biodegradable, not just bio-based.
- Choose bio-based bristles over petroleum ones. Castor-oil (Nylon-11) bristles cut fossil-fuel input and carbon footprint compared to standard nylon, with the same plaque-fighting firmness. They're not biodegradable, but they're a real step down from petroleum-derived plastic.
- Move to solid ingredients. Dehydrated tablet formulas replace plastic tubes, cutting out that plastic contact point entirely.
